Lutherans Worshipping in Afghanistan

(Arleigh was stationed at Schofield before deploying to Afghanistan.   His family attends Trinity.)

Thought the brethren may be interested in what the MAF of BMS is doing. Here is a photo of the Lutheran Worship service at Bagram Airbase. As Lutherans, we bring something unique to the table. Many of the faithful Lutherans are an encouragement to me-many have sought out a worship service. Had a parishoner today that I have been in contact for the past 3 months (he is at Kandahar) who was in town and able to attend worship. We are making plans to have a meal before he flies home on R & R. Some locations try “lumping” the “Lutherans” in with other groups, but that does not mix. All I can try to do is be faithful to our Lord and our confession of Him.
It was interesting, before coming here, I contacted the MAF and asked for a listing of Lutherans at this base. The secretary didn’t have any listed for the country (as you know congregations are encouraged to submit names and addresses to MAF of their service personnel who are deployed, it is a good way of networking: it also informs the command chaplains that there is indeed a need for Lutheran services as well as including them on the Ministry by Mail Program). Even though informed we didn’t have any personnel currently deployed, a number have come out of the woodwork!
