Poet visits grade 8

Italo, Ester, Mel

Ester, a published poet from Guatemala came to the 8th grade today. She has already published three books and is quite popular in Guatemala for her work. Ester talked about how she started very young and would read to her mother what she wrote and how she gets her inspiration from her life in the streets, and the world around her. She told us about how we all have a little voice inside of us that we can look to for inspiration. She also told us a little about her country and the 36 years of civil war going on there. People came and taught about poetry to help the victims express their feelings through writing. Ester, with some assistance from Italo Foglesong, read and talked a little bit about a book she has, called The Verses of Black and White. First, she translated it to English and then read it in Spanish. Questions were asked in the end and it was a very enjoyable. Thank you ,Ester, for sharing with our class.
